Washington Wizards to face New York Knicks at NBA London 2019

John Wall could be set to compete at NBA London 2019

The Washington Wizards will take on the New York Knicks at NBA London 2019 on January 17, the NBA has announced.

The news originally came from a page published on the NBA website, allowing fans to register for tickets, which also names the teams set to compete and the date of the clash – ahead of the official announcement.

The NBA confirmed details for the game following the apparent leak, which has become an annual occasion in the British capital each January.

It seems the NBA have confirmed the two teams set to take to the O2.

It seems the NBA have confirmed the two teams set to take to the O2.

Last season saw the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers bring their talents across the Atlantic, with the Celtics claiming a 114-103 win over their Eastern Conference rivals.

This will be the third time the New York Knicks will be heading to the UK for the event, with their last visit in 2015 as they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. Before that they beat the Detroit Pistons in 2013.

It will be the first time Washington will have made the trip to London however, with the Wizards having played in Brazil, Germany, Spain and Mexico in previous seasons.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was delighted to bring the game over to British shores once again.

“We’ve been playing regular-season match-ups in London for nearly a decade, and over that time the games and the surrounding festivities have grown into the equivalent of an NBA All-Star experience transported to Europe.” he said.

“Fans and partners from across the continent come to celebrate basketball and enjoy the excitement and experience of an NBA game.”

A number of NBA stars will be heading to London for the occasion.

John Wall and Bradley Beal will headline the Wizards’ roster, should they stay at the franchise. Meanwhile Kristaps Porzingis is the stand-out star on the Knicks’ roster, but questions still remain over his recovery from an ACL injury picked up last season.

Wall himself was excited to bring his talents to the O2 Arena, and hopes to use the game as an opportunity to showcase his side’s quality to the watching crowds.

“It will be an honor to represent the Washington Wizards organization as we play our first game in the UK.” he said.

“I look forward to connecting with our fans in London and using the experience to further bond as a team.”

The page revealing the supposed details regarding the game was found easily online by searching for NBA London 2019.

It reveals the teams and date for the clash and allows fans to sign up for early ticket access.

The game often draws huge interest, with thousands of fans regularly left disappointed by sell-out games and inflated sell-on ticket prices.

Fans have previously called for extra games to come to the UK to help meet demand, but it seems that NBA London 2019 will be no different to recent seasons, with no other game mentioned in the online ‘leak’.

Talk of an All-Star game heading to the UK has also been a common occurrence in recent years, although the likelihood of that happening could be a number of seasons down the line.

Meanwhile, dreams of a London-based NBA franchise is still a long way from realisation, with Silver previously admitting that it’s not something likely to happen in the near future.

You can register for tickets to the game here, with the event likely to sell-out in a matter of minutes following their release this autumn. Whilst for more NBA London 2019 news, click here.
